Maths Problem Solving

Our group is planning a kayaking trip to Okokewa Island at Hillary Outdoors camp.  The distance from Karaka Bay to the island is 4.5km.  It takes about 34 minutes to kayak 1km.

  1. How long will it take to travel to the island at this speed?
  2. On the return journey there is a headwind.  This means it will take us 8 minutes longer to kayak each kilometre.  How long will it take us to get back to Karaka Bay?

Extension:
If we leave at 9am, and spend 2 and a half hours on the island, what time will we get back home?
